Our history
Origins of the GTMBC
The Golden Triangle Minority Business Council (GTMBC) was founded on Wednesday, September 14, 1989, through the collaborative efforts of a diverse group of community leaders. Corporate executives, plant managers, county officials, judges, mayors, minority business owners, city council members, civic and business leaders, chambers of commerce, and media representatives joined together to establish the Council. The GTMBC was formed to serve as a reliable resource for identifying qualified minority suppliers and to promote minority business development programs. Six major refining and petrochemical industries committed to the establishment and funding of the GTMBC.
Incorporated as a privately funded, non-profit organization, the Golden Triangle Minority Business Council, Inc. (GTMBC) was officially in place by May 12, 1992. A noteworthy achievement occurred when the GTMBC, in collaboration with SCORE, named its first awardees of the U.S. Small Business Administration Small Business Person of the Year. The 1992 MBE vendor recipient companies were Golden Triangle Janitorial Service Company and Elite Business Service Company. Through the Council’s mission and goals, corporate members and minority women-owned small business entrepreneurs began to build stronger working relationships, fostering a partnership focused on economic development.
A prominent example of corporate support is Mobil Oil, a Founding Charter Corporation. Mobil Oil demonstrated significant leadership by serving as Chairman of the Board for the Council during the following years: 1990-1991; 1992-1993; 1996-1997; 1998-2000; and 2000-2002. When a corporation supports a minority-owned women small business enterprise, it not only diversifies its supplier base but also cultivates a productive business alliance. Importantly, this support contributes to building a stronger, more equitable society where all can prosper. The GTMBC facilitates a unique partnership in economic and community development by consolidating the interests and resources of industries through coaching and mentoring, directing those resources to Minority Women-Owned Small Business Enterprise vendors.
GTMBC President Historical Review
Beverly L. Hatcher, President
Beverly L. Hatcher (Beaumont) has been President of the Golden Triangle Minority Business Council (GTMBC), since June 1, 1990. Hatcher is a career diplomat with a solid background in the fields of economic development, business administration, small business certification and development. Through Hatcher’s leadership, the Council was honored and proud to announce in 1999, its selection as a recipient of a 5-year award from the U. S. Small Business Administration as an SDB (Small Disadvantaged Business) Private Certifier. Most significant about this award is that the Council was one of only 29 business agencies chosen out a field of 346 applicants.
